How can the Kipling spreadsheet be used to choose and follow a retirement portfolio? Maybe for diversification reasons, retirement funds should be in more than one of the ITA-followed portfolios ?

The Kipling will handle any tickers so long as Yahoo has information. Therefore the Kipling should work with retirement funds or mutual funds.
