Readers of ITA Wealth Management know my preference for Vanguard ETFs over iShares ETFs. The preference is primarily due to lower costs. Many ETFs from both companies are available commission free through discount brokers such as TDAmeritrade. Are we giving something up by going with Vanguard ETFs? To answer this question I provide a ranking snapshot of the “Big Six” ETFs from both Vanguard and iShares and let readers examine the results. HedgeHunter used iShare ETFs in The Feynman Study as they had a longer history, something required for the analysis.
Vanguard vs. iShares Rankings: Here are the match ups to consider.
VTV vs. IVE: Advantage to iShares
VOE vs. IJJ: Advantage to Vanguard
VBR vs. IJS: Advantage to iShares
VUG vs. IVW: Advantage to Vanguard
VOT vs. IJK: Advantage to Vanguard
VBK vs. IJT: Advantage to iShares
Three advantages for iShares and three for Vanguard. Wait three to six months and the advantages will change. There is very little difference between the asset class match ups so I suggest using those ETFs that are commission free from your discount broker.
