Ernie et al.,

This article on the probability of coming crashes in the bond and stock market is of interest.

Gold is one off ramp.  I checked on SGOL, GLD, and IAU. (corrected or edited after Lee spotted error.)  SGOL has the lowest expense ratio (17 basis points) and has a slight edge on performance.  I'm recommending SGOL as the ETF to use for the Gold asset class.

@lgschamp,

Yes, I meant to type IAU.  Daily volume is useful, particularly if one is working with a large portfolio.

If Schwab manages to swallow up TD Ameritrade, one might see the volume of SGOL increase as more users will run into it on the Schwab site.  That could be a few years away.
