A good friend of mine offered to host a jazz listening group for four consecutive weeks. While jazz is not at the top of my music preference list, I decided to join the group in an effort to expand my knowledge in “American” music. Searching my music list, I find I have over one week of jazz selections. While searching the Internet I find there are at least 52 genres of jazz music and that Ragtime is perhaps the oldest, beginning in the late 1800s. Here is an interesting jazz time line that might interest you.
When I think of jazz, what comes to mind are the Big Bands of the 1940s. One of my first 45 vinyl discs had In The Mood on one side and A String of Pearls on the other. I think it was a Benny Goodman or Glenn Miller recording.
Here are a few of my favorite jazz pieces.
- In The Mood
- Take Five
- Fidgety Feet
- Take The A Train
- Twelfth Street Rag
- Yancey’s Bugle Call with Preacher Jack on the piano.
- Sweet Georgia Brown
- A String of Pearls
There are many more I could list. If you have a few favorite jazz pieces, post them in the comments section and include the recording artist if you have the information handy. I’d like to know if I have the music.
